The Power of Stillness: A Reminder to Rest and Recharge

Over the past few days, I’ve been feeling a little off—on the verge of getting sick. For me, that’s usually a sign to slow down, take it easy, and prioritise rest over productivity so my body can regain its strength.

I usually start my day quite actively with exercise—surfing, swimming, or simply moving my body. It’s something I absolutely love, and it’s always been a great way to begin the day. But this morning, I felt the need to shift gears. Instead, I started my day with slow breathing, gentle stretching, and a yin yoga session.

As I sat in one of the poses, I had a realisation (again, I have to admit):

Rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Stillness isn’t unproductive—it’s how we recharge, sustain our energy and regain clarity.

In the past, rest and stillness for me were mostly about recharging when my battery was low. I’ve gotten better at slowing down when I need to, but this morning reminded me that I still sometimes feel a sense of guilt when I take things slow. There’s this conditioned thinking that if I’m not “doing,” I’m wasting time—especially on a beautiful day when I feel like I should be out and about.

A couple of months weeks ago, I shared the importance of stillness and rest on Instagram and if I’m honest, I haven’t fully embodied it. But life has a way of presenting the same lesson until we finally learn it and choose a different path. While I’ve been good at slowing down when I feel off or overwhelmed, I rarely make space for rest when everything feels okay.

This morning, though, that lesson landed with a wave of clarity and creativity. I have been struggling to feel inspired, caught in the cycle of believing I needed to constantly be productive to move my business forward. But as soon as I slowed down, the creative energy started flowing again.

Rest and Stillness aren’t just tools for recovery…

… they’re essential practices that support every area of our lives. Whether we’re feeling off balance or perfectly fine, creating intentional space for rest is one of the most powerful things we can do for our well-being.

The Benefits of Rest and Stillness

Rest and stillness go far beyond simply taking a break—they provide a foundation for our mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing:

  1. Mental Clarity and Creativity
Slowing down gives our minds space to process and reflect. This space can lead to new ideas, problem-solving breakthroughs, and creative inspiration. Rest clears the mental clutter that clouds our thinking.

  2. Emotional Regulation
Stillness helps us tune into our emotions without judgment. It allows us to process feelings that might otherwise get buried under the rush of daily life. By resting, we create room for self-compassion and emotional healing.

  3. Physical Recovery
Our bodies thrive when we allow them to rest. Stillness supports the parasympathetic nervous system—our “rest and digest” mode—helping to lower stress hormones, reduce inflammation, and restore energy.

  4. Deeper Connection to Self
In the quiet moments of stillness, we reconnect with ourselves. We begin to hear the whispers of our inner wisdom and intuition, which are often drowned out by the busyness of life.

  5. Grounding and Presence
Rest allows us to step away from the constant cycle of “doing” and move into a state of simply “being.” This grounding presence not only reduces stress but also enhances our ability to navigate life’s challenges with more ease and resilience.

Rest and stillness aren’t just for when we feel stuck, overwhelmed, or out of balance. They’re how we stay connected, grounded, and open to life’s flow—before feelings of overwhelm or imbalance take hold. If you’re feeling out of balance, overwhelmed, or stuck, it’s even more important to slow down and prioritise rest.

Let this be a reminder: You don’t have to wait until you’re struggling to give yourself the gift of rest. Take time to pause, even when life feels okay—it’s how we stay clear, aligned, and intentional.

I’ve been reflecting on this myself, and moving forward, I’m challenging myself to make rest a regular part of my life, even when things feel fine. Honestly, it’s not always easy to prioritise stillness, but I’m curious to see how it can support my clarity, creativity, and overall balance—even on the good days.
